I first came here by DC-3 in 1970, when Chiang Mai University was out in the country and oxcarts still brought goods to the Warorot Market. I came back many times through the years as a backpacker and moved here permanently three years ago. Laura has done a wonderful job of capturing so much that is new and luxurious in CM, at the same time honoring the timeless beauty of the old city and the Thai countryside. She puts new visitors in touch with Lanna-Thai traditions that make this such a special place—crafts that are available in the factories and villages where they are produced and Lanna culture (traditional dance, music and architecture) that has evolved into a vibrant modern art and music scene. And elephants! Once worshipped and ridden into battle, they still abound nearby at camps where visitors can interact up close and personal. The high-end French and Lanna restaurants she recommends that I have already tried are indeed excellent. But after reading Luxurious Chiang Mai, I want to try them all! Most important, now that I live here, are the rich variety of luxury hotels—in the old city, on bustling Nimman Road, and out in the country—that I can recommend to friends visiting from overseas now that our backpacking days are a memory.

A great, easy to read guide on the best of the best for Chiang Mai. I never knew there were so many luxurious hotels in Chiang Mai and they all look exceptionally well appointed with fantastic facilities. The innumerable quality spas discussed in this book really excited me. I was so happy the author considered good coffee places in Chiang Mail (critical for me!) and very importantly ethical elephant homes to visit. I would be curious to know of any speciality 5-star vegetarian options in any of restaurants listed.I also liked that the author considered trips out of Chiang Mai (although from the activities outlined for Chiang Mai it appears that if you want to be kept busy for a few weeks, one could easily just do that!). Highly recommended for all those wanting to enjoy the very best of Chiang Mai.

When my husband and I decided to take a trip to Thailand, I discovered this wonderful guide written specifically for Chiang Mai to start the planning process. I highly recommend using a book like this either in lieu of or in addition to trip advisor. Ms. Gibbs's book served as the perfect first step in the process of putting together a stay in Chiang Mai. The writing is spot-on, as is the editing.

I've been looking for the best hotels in Chiang Mai and this book has them all! I love the look of the Dhara Dhevi hotel and their spa too. Luxurious Chiang Mai has helped me plan my whole holiday, from start to finish. Recommended for all travellers from the US, not just wealthy ones - Chiangmai seems so affordable.

I bought this travel guide back in December last year and it was great! I found a lot of useful information that was not readily available on the internet. We got a really good deal for our spa package and hotel. The author has clearly done her research.

Perfect guide for finding the best places in Chiang Mai. It gave me some really great ideas.

I believe this book is a little bit overpriced but I downloaded it when it was free on promo. A friend of mine visited Chiang Mai last summer. Although summer is considered a low season in Thailand, he really loved this place and its unique atmosphere. I also traveled to Thailand a lot but haven't been to Chiang Mai yet. So I am really interested in this destination.This book gives all the necessary info for the traveler in Thailand. Whether you are a beginner, or you know the culture of this country already, you will find lots of useful things. E.g., if you haven't been to Thailand in November, you probably do not know what kind of holiday is Loi Krathong and how to celebrate it. This book will deliver to you this kind of info. And by the way, Chiang Mai is a great place to celebrate Loi Krathong. This city is more authentic and less spoiled by tourists and money than some of the popular places like Pattaya and Phuket. That's why people want to visit Chiang Mai although it's far away from the sea.In general, I liked how the info is presented in this book. But I also think the author could make a better book cover. It doesn't look that great, especially the fonts.

A must have guide for anyone planning a wedding here. I have lived in Chiang Mai for three years and didn't know a third of these locations. So glad to have this now that I am planning a wedding here.

At first they both benefit. As he gets older, he gets more and more demanding- in the end, requiring her very body so he can have a luxury boat- and she does it all. At the end he is old and sits on her stump, and she's happy.Prescriptive much?OK, so how about we do some gender-bending here. What if the kid was a girl and the apple tree a male? Would that scenario even be plausible to any but the most rabid, fact-free Men's Rights Activists (who are convinced this is going on all the time, but only because the LAW requires their sacrifices! Woez!)?Or- even better- how about if the tree and the kid were both female, or both male? Would this look anything LIKE a healthy, wholesome relationship? -This is probably the most telling, because it gets sex-roles, gender-roles and essentialism totally out of the picture, leaving only individuals in a perversely co-dependent (Wikipedia says S/M, but I disagree) relationship.But! The crappy messages are hidden because of the sex-essentialist writing of the original. This means that boys- it's a kids' book, after all- are being encouraged to be pushy, even when they know it will be devastating to the female ("Hey, she could always say NO!"), and girls are encouraged to sacrifice literally ALL to a male who clearly does not have her best interests at heart- or even under random consideration.It is a formula to make Good Girls who acquiesce to every damn thing Teh Menz or Teh Boyz or Teh Authoritiez "ask" of them, and gives utterly NO grounds to say "Hell, no!" Because Good Females don't DO that.I never even let my daughter take this one out of the library when she was a kid. Although, if I were doing it now I might... but I'd genderbend it and have a discussion.

My wife and I were joined in a nearly two year battle with a disease that wanted to take her from me. As the season of giving neared, she asked me to purchase a gift for me that would be from her. Without a word, I held and put it in a quiet place to be read again at a special time.On the early morning of January 31st, while I held and kissed her gently, she left the field of battle.This morning I re-read her gift to me and actually, Mr. Silverstein, your gift to us.My wife Vincenza (Vincy) of almost 45 years was my giving tree.Now as a old man I sit where she rests. There are only 30 pages to these book. The illustrations are clean & simple black drawings on crisp white pages. I have always loved this story. With the adult coloring craze still going on and storybook coloring books becoming a big deal I decided to pick up a copy of The Giving Tree that I would color to give to my kids and future grandkids. This edition is perfect for that purpose.

I bought this book to read to my kids. I honestly had never fully read it before but I had read the reviews and thought I would give it a shot. It arrived on time and in good condition. The copy I had received was the 50th-anniversary edition. Beautiful hardcover, with a glossy dust jacket that makes the book stand out. Before reading this book to my kids, I read it out loud for my husband to hear it as well. It is both a sweet and sad story. There are so many ways a person can view this story and I was worried that it would go over my kids head but as I was reading it, especially around the parts where the boy got older and only kept coming back whenever he wanted or needed something, I could hear my daughter feeling sad for the tree. She had asked, "Why doesn't he want to play with the tree?" Needless to say, it was a good teachable moment about giving and taking or giving and not expecting anything in return and so on. I am very glad I purchased this book.
