I have been a fitness nut all my life, yet last year a combination of a reaction prescription drugs and latent back problems landed me on crutches...two back surgeries, 9 months now of physical therapy and still walking on two canes. Half of each day is spent in physical t herapy, and no one knows whether nerve damage will recover. I have my own consulting business, and I have avoided face to face meetings for fear of the reaction of clients and competitors to my physical infirmities...loss of business, loss of income, loss of lifestyle, loss of image, on and on. It was all getting deep into my head. Last week I heard Barry Ritholz on Bloomberg interview Ryan Holiday and discuss this book, which I promptly purchased. It has helped immensely in a single week to refocus and avoid a total flame out. I read the Stoics in college and later, but they never "spoke to me" like they do now. It is fundamentally a philosophy of coping. I still hang on to Charles Spurgeon, but so much of that is about what comes later; I needed something to help me with today. Interestingly, in reading through it (and half a dozen others I purchased since then), I have pondered how much we have drifted from our Graeco-Western traditions. The Founding Fathers were steeped in this stuff, but somewhere along the way we have all become tethered to the whims of feelings, including other's feelings, and the Stoics had the solution to these thousands of years ago. I can't control those, and so I don't allocate my precious limited resources to them. So I work around them. Adapt. The Media in this country inundates us with such distraction (the topic of another book by this author, which I also bought). What would a Stoic say to someone who says they "don't feel safe?" Probably tell them to take action within their control to be safe and give up on demanding that the entire world respond out of guilt, badgering or whatever to appease your feelings. And then the Stoic would get on about his business. Its a great, and dangerous, little book. Thank you, Mr. Holiday, for bringing it back in an easily digestible format.

I grew up with my mom’s daily meditation book on an end table in our living room. The spine was broken, pages browned, a tasseled bookmark showed the date as reliably as my iPhone. She still reads it every day."The Daily Stoic: 366 Meditations on Wisdom, Perseverance, and the Art of Daily Living" is the meditation book my son will remember, the one I'll read every day. It's now on my end table with a red ribbon marking the season. The Daily Stoic isn’t simply a book to make me think, it’s an action guide, a “prescription for handling ourselves and our actions in the world.” The great Stoics remind me never to be satisfied with learning--I must always be doing. In order to lead a successful life, I must practice cutting through distractions and desires to get to things that matter. That’s the only way to become a better human being. That’s the call to action I’m getting from this book--you will, too.In "The Daily Stoic," Stephen Hanselman and Ryan Holiday have curated works by the great Stoic philosophers--Epictetus, Marcus Aurelius, Seneca, weaving in modern thinkers and situations I can use immediately. Each month has a specific theme such as clarity, right action, duty, awareness, and problem solving. Lessons build on prior themes, creating an easy-to-use teaching tool out of philosophers that can often be overwhelming.I love this book for its excellent translations and applicable life lessons. Each meditation has just enough to challenge me and help me feel I can put the thoughts into action today.

Ryan Holiday is a best-selling author (“Trust Me I’m Lying,” “Ego is the Enemy,” “The Obstacle is the Way”) and a blogger. He brands himself as someone focused on life, dealing with idiots, how to be self-critical and self-aware, humility, philosophy, reading and strategy.I became aware of Holliday when I read and reviewed his thoughtful and helpful book “The Obstacle is the Way.” It is a book about stoicism, the ancient Greek philosophy and its principles, which has sold more than 100,000 copies and has been translated into 17 languages. Stoicism is an ancient Hellenistic philosophic school founded in Athens that promoted the daily management of self. It teaches 1) that virtue, the highest good, is based on knowledge, and 2) that the wise live in harmony with the divine Reason (also identified with Fate and Providence) that governs nature. These principles are indifferent to the vicissitudes of fortune and to pleasure and pain. Some will be familiar to readers, others will not:o Seize life and take advantage of it.o If you seek tranquility, do less.o It can ruin your life only if it ruined your character. Otherwise, it cannot harm you – inside or out.o Do what we can, endure and bear what we must.o None of what we do lasts, no matter how clever or brilliant.o So if we throw out other people’s recognition, what is left for us to prize?Stoics include Marcus Aurelius, Cicero, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Viktor Frankle, Ruben Carter, Ulysses S Grant, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, Churchill, Steve Jobs, Seattle Seahawks Coach Pete Carroll, Cub’s Manager Joe Maddon, and thousands more.“Stoicism as a philosophy is really about the mental game,” Holiday says. “It is not a set of ethics or principles. It is a collection of spiritual exercises designed to help people through the difficulty of life by managing emotion; specifically, non-helpful emotion.”In “Daily Stoic,” Holiday provides 366 daily meditations on wisdom, perseverance, and the art of living. He provides a year of quotations and life lessons drawn from the three great Stoic sages -Seneca the Younger, Epictetus (a freed slave) and Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The meditations are organized under three primary topics (similar to those in “The Obstacle is…”) “The Discipline of Perception,” “The Discipline of Action,” and the “Discipline of Will.” Each topic is further divided into monthly themes: “Clarity,” “Passions and Emotions,” “Awareness,” “Unbiased Thought,” “Right Action,” “Problem Solving,” “Duty”“Pragmatism,” “Fortitude and Resilience,” “Virtue and Kindness,” “Acceptance,” and “Meditations on Mortality.”Paul Tillich noted that Stoicism is “the only real alternative to Christianity in the Western world.” It came to many of the same conclusions about how to think and live. Both are characterized by: An emphasis on hardship. A sense of man’s depravity and a constant self-examination An inner freedom from the world. An aversion to excess. The goal of Stoicism is to attain inner peace. The meditations of the “Daily Stoic” can be a help in overcoming adversity, practicing self-control, being conscious of our impulses, realizing how short life is and making the most of it. The principles within Stoicism are, perhaps, the most relevant and practical sets of rules for those who choose to embrace the obstacles of life. They are the tools that are immediately practical to our current endeavors.Thought-provoking, soul-searching exercises are included with each daily meditation. “The Daily Stoic” is an excellent way to begin or end each day.

I was looking for a book that was similar to a devotional without the religious aspect. I also wanted a daily reminder of mindfulness, awareness, philosophy, meditation, and thought. This book is exactly what I was looking for. I would recommend it to anyone.

My piano teacher recommended this book, "With your Own Two Hands: Self-Discovery Through Music" (1981) to her adult students. The author, Seymour Bernstein, is a noted teacher, pianist, composer, and writer. I learned a great deal from this book about the love of music and about piano practice. I have been playing the piano for most of my adult life but only returned with some trepidation to take lessons about four years ago. This book needs to be read in the way Bernstein recommends approaching a new piece to be learned at the keyboard. Bernstein recommends starting by stuggling to read the piece through to get a sense of its musical message and its demands. If it is a piece that the student falls in love with, he or she is ready to begin the hard, detailed work required to learn the music. Bernstein says that "unconditional love" of a piece is required for the work of learning it well. So it is with this book. It needs to be read through as a whole to get a sense of where it is going and to draw the inspiration to persevere. The detailed exercises, specifics, and recommendations are to be approached selectively and over time. There is much to be learned from an initial cover-to-cover reading; but for the pianist, this is not a book that should simply be read through and put aside. The book proceeds in two related ways that tend to be intertwined throughout. First the book offers broad discussions about music and motivation. Bernstein articulates the value that people find by devoting themselves to the piano. He describes how playing music requires an integration of physical skill, feeling, and thought and then broadens this insight from the piano and music to argue that this integration is required to have a successful, full life. People who perform music seriously, for Bernstein, take one path of the many possible courses of self-realization. It is a necessary path for those devoted to it. There are allusions in the book to philosophy and literature, to meditative and breathing practices and to Zen Buddhism that cast a good deal of light on Bernstein's understanding of music and of practicing the piano. The second part of the book addresses the specifics of piano practice. Bernstein proceeds from broad considerations, such as improving one's concentration during practice time, to specific detailed instruction on matters such as body and hand position, rhythm and volume, securing the independence of the hands and fingers, voicing chords, pedaling, and much more. The book offers many detailed examples and exercises on aspects of piano technique. These sections ideally must be read over time and in detail in tandem with one's practice and always with a broad view of music-making in mind. The book is divided into three broad sections dealing with the necessity and motivations for practicing the piano, the discipline required to play at one's best, and performance, including memorization and overcoming nervousness. The book is written for pianists at all levels of abilities and talents. Bernstein does not write for performers with virtuoso or professional skills, but he does write for those who take their music seriously. For those who have music as part of their lives and want to share it with others, age and natural ability are secondary considerations at best. Bernstein writes eloquently throughout of amateurs who have busy lives and careers in other fields while making time for the pursuit of music. In the "Finale" of his book he writes of these amateurs:"Stimulated at the mere thought of turning a musical phrase with control and artistry, they approach their practicing with a religious fervor and a childlike enthusiasm born of an unconditional love. No one forces them to practice; they are drawn to it. Their lives, they admit unashamedly, would be meaningless without music. Such people, though they may be highly accomplished in their chosen fields, are in truth among the most devoted servants of music. It is they who dignify the status of amateurism." (p.283)Bernstein writes inspiringly and clearly. The book is full of stories and insights, each of which may strike chords for different readers. The book has many anecdotes about one of Bernstein's teachers, the great English pianist, Sir Clifford Curzon. A story that I liked involved Curzon and the music of Schubert, a composer I study.A student of Bernstein heard Sir Clifford perform Schubert's opus posthumous B-flat major piano sonata. He fell in love with the piece and wrote a poem about it which Bernstein then showed to Curzon. Curzon met the student, thanked him for the poem and said: "It is a grave responsibility to love a composer as much as you love Schubert. You have no other recourse then but to practice diligently so as to give back this love to others through performing." (p.203) The student practiced his Schubert and later told Bernstein:"I feel that my love for Schubert shows that I comprehend his music in some very special way. And I think it's this that gives me that grave responsibility Sir Clifford spoke about. You see I used to think I had no right even to speak of my feelings for Schubert's music, let alone try to project what I feel to others in my playing. Now, I'm convinced that what I feel is valid. But only by practicing intelligently do I earn the right to communicate my feelings to others." (p.204)It is a shame that this book currently is out-of-print. It is inspiring to read and will be valuable to serious students of the piano.Robin Friedman

This book was copyrighted in 1981 which may explain the somewhat dated 'NY-psychoanalytic' outlook that reminded me of my clinical training books. The author portrays himself as an emotionally attuned mentor to his students similar to the analyst sitting slightly out of the line of vision of the student at the keyboard (my image from the reading) and guiding their discovery of inner musical potential. I actually think this is an apt metaphor for the special relationship that can exist between a music student and teacher; it is only the somewhat self-admiring quality of his narrative that was slightly off-putting to me. On the other hand, a sensitive and effective teacher is entitled to offer himself as an example. The author is clear that problems in progressing musically are mainly due to failure to practice in an effective manner. However, he willing to venture into interpretation of covertly destructive attitudes of parents or teachers. For example, the author offers as a possible, although infrequent, cause of a student's failure to progress, a subconscious envy, subliminally communicated to a talented student, from a teacher who had him(her)self failed to become a concert pianist and must settle for a career in teaching. While this is possible, it must be extremely unlikely. That being said, the author is clear that responsibility to solve any blocks to musical expression rests with the student. The remainder of his examples are useful or at least merit consideration. He emphasizes the necessity for learning to sight-read, memorization and discusses the problem of performance anxiety. A very intriguing suggestion is his advocacy of group classes as well as individual lessons in order to give the student experience of receiving and giving feedback with peers as well as practice in performance in front of a supportive audience. I would recommend that this book be read in conjunction with Gerald Klickstein's "The Musician's Way" which is more contemporary, offers concrete guidelines for skill development in a number of areas, supported by recent research on memory and reading skills, and is appropriately sensitive to psychological issues.

Because of this book my life took an amazing turn. Seymour has been coaching me as a pianist since 1990! His writing is brilliant. The man is a NATIONAL GEM! Ethan Hawke has produced a documentary about Seymour the past two three years. IF you are a pianist and in need of wisdom your present piano teacher is not capable of sharing READ THIS BOOK. It is a BIBLE.

I really like this book. In a short time it has really helped me. As someone who plays several instruments, I quickly realized that much of the material in this book is equally helpful to those who play instruments other than piano.

I study with a pianist who plays for Seymour Bernstein before giving his own concerts. The book is full of "piano education." Seynour himself studied with a great artist (who wrote the forward). He writes about his own students at NYU, very instructive.

Finally a book on how to practice and perform that puts all others to shame. The most useful information on proper body etiquette, multiple options on how to memorize and repair technique and musical problems.

If you haven't seen Phil Hales work before than I highly recommend this cheap almost promotional format collection, but otherwise you've probably seen many of these works before. It feels like better paper and overall higher production values than GOAD, but to date I still don't think a good collection of Hales work has been put together. Look at Odd Nerdrum or Jenny Saville's collections and that's the treatment Hales work deserves in my opinion. I would love to see a big large format book with close ups of the paint work and learn more about the artist. There are also some pieces I'm not quite sure were photographed very well.If you are new to Hale then you'll love this book if you're already a fan this won't have much to offer.
