I started climbing about a year ago and I felt I was a bit heavy for climbing (struggled to do even 1 pull-up). A coworker recommended me this book and I'm really glad I got it.The book taught me how to use technique to overcome my weight disadvantage (gravity is a turd-face sometimes). It has activities you can do at the climbing gym (safe for newbies like me) that'll help you become more aware of your footwork, balance, shifting your center of gravity. It also goes into details on what muscle groups you are using and how they are relevant to your climbing. It's the best substitute for an actual mentor imo.I haven't watched the DVD it comes with yet, but the book was so good that I didn't ever feel the need to pop it in the player.Climb on!

Getting a ton of good information out of this book. I haven't checked out the DVD, so cannot comment on it, but all of the pictures and written descriptions in the book are so clear and well thought out that I haven't felt the need.I'm a beginner climber 4-5 months, so I have mainly focused on stuff discussed in the first half of the book. The most insightful tips that I've taken away are on balance and the use of opposing forces on the wall to climb smarter. I am continuing to work through the exercises described in the book to take my training to the next level.

I'm a relatively new climber, climbing for almost a year and currently working V2 and 10b. I received this book a little under a week ago and have already made my way through it once. It has made me consciously aware of many things that I was sensing intuitively at times, but had trouble recreating consistently because I wasn't aware of the underlying dynamics going on. It also exposed to me several concepts that I haven't 'felt' yet. It's full of great training practices, particularly for movement, and as such is particularly helpful for a beginning climber like myself. I'm sure that any climber though could benefit from honing technique and control over the concepts explored in this book. The training schedules outlined in the back are rather intense for anyone with a 9-5. I tend to climb 3 to 4 times a week for a couple of hours, but the books recommends up to 7 hours in one performance day in a week, with training days lasting up to 5 hours. Regardless, they provide a great basic structure to work from. Additionally, a great deal of information is outlined on the specifics of aerobic and anaerobic activity and how to increase both.In short, I heard this book was a must-have and I emphatically agree. I am very happy that I purchased it and I am confident it will help me push my climbing to the next level.

As someone who feels he understands movement (previously a professional ballet dancer), and whose brain likes breaking ideas and concepts down into their component parts/works algorithmically and mathematically/wants to understand the relationship between certain actions and their effect on one's equilibrium, this book is an incredible asset. I am a relatively new climber, and while I appreciate the tips and lessons my friends have share with me, few have been able to explain to me the "why" underlying certain moves or actions -- they are able to show me what they do, but the synthesis of those actions within my own body is awkward since no two bodies are exactly alike; accordingly, what works for one, may not quite work for another. This book on the other hand, provides me not only the nomenclature, but also the building blocks and conceptual break down I was so very much looking for. It is no quick-study guide to immediate improvements in one's climbing, but what it did for me is it has given me the tools and mental thought processes/concepts needed, that over time I will be able to work into my own movements. The DVD is relatively short, but gives clear depictions of the drills you can try at your own climbing gym. Definitely recommend this book to climbers - beginner or advanced - that want to more thoroughly understand movement/climbing concepts.

"The Self-Coached Climber" is an excellent training resource for climbers at just about any level. I bought the book recently and before even finishing reading it, I started seeing improvements in my technique from working on the exercises. In contrast to other books like "How to Climb 5.12," SCC is highly detailed and specific in its approach to improving fundamentals like balance, center of gravity and movement skills. The book provides excellent exercises for particular skills, and these are illustrated with abundant photos and/or drawings that show how the exercise should be done. Additionally, videos on the accompanying DVD can clarify any confusion with the exercises. Finally, a detailed training plan is presented for developing the stamina, strength and technique needed to move up in the climbing grades.I think it's worth noting that while this is billed as a "self-coached" training book, some of the exercises can't be done without a partner. In fact, working with an equally-motivated partner through the course of the book would probably be the ideal approach.I believe "The Self-Coached Climber" is a perfect companion piece to Arno Ilgner's mental training book "The Rock Warrior's Way" for anyone wanting to become a better and more confident climber.

Great tool. Ive been climbing for thirty plus yrs. Ive purchased, read, applied the techniques in most of the climbing books that deal with how to get good at climbing. (You would think I would be better!) The thing that I think sets this one appart is the many many technique exercises. You can learn how to do a move. When to do the move. How to practice the move. When to practice the move. And how to blend that move into your bullet proof stack of moves that you will use when you are pumping out, runout, cruxing, or just trying to make it to the top of that red boulder problem in the gym! :)

The books is fine

ESL Games for the Classroom by Michael Digiacomo is a great resource for interactive English classroom activities. This compact resource includes more than one hundred activities that don't require much prep work. The color-coded book makes it easy to reference exactly the games you need based on the skills you are teaching. These activities include:speakinglisteningwriting & readingvocabularyspelling & numbergrammarWritten by an experienced ESL teacher, ESL Games for the Classroom is easily adapted to different classroom scenarios, including small and large class sizes and even one-on-one lessons. The author ranks the games for difficulty, and includes a reference chart at the end of the book for quickly finding an appropriate activity. As a teacher of online ESL classes, I am finding this book to be very useful. I can adapt many of the games to fit into a short time frame for extension activities. Each game is easy to implement and has a 'recipe' that includes the materials, prep work, and implementation ideas. These concise instructions make it a breeze to fill in extra time or give students a little extra help. The best thing about ESL Games for the Classroom is that it provides fun ways to increase fluency among English language learners. Any time I can make my classes more engaging and fun while increasing my students' language skills, I feel like I'm doing my job. ESL Games for the Classroom certainly makes these goals easier to maintain. The publisher provided a review copy of ESL Games for the Classroom. I was not required to write a review.

I am currently teaching English to lower level Chinese children and I was searching for good production activities mainly for teaching speaking. In my opinion, using games for production activities may be one of the best ways to learn a language and this book is replete with interesting and adaptable activities. I was able to adapt many of them quickly and easily into my daily lessons, especially the pronunciation activity on p. 24 using minimal pairs. All in all, I found this to be a practical and easy-to-use book and I highly recommend it to both beginner and experienced ELT professionals. The book also includes many great teaching ideas and strategies for teaching all language levels and it should be in your ELT library.

This book starts with an understanding that play is serious when learning is the goal. This book offers a rich collection of examples of how a spirit of play and the support or scaffolding of a game with clear and simple rules of can bring learning to life. While this book emphasizes fun in learning, it also creates the support for learner independence. With games modeled, not explained, and easy to grasp the focus of learners is on actively using the language. This is a resource I'd recommend for any language teacher.

Yes, I always have a plan but classroom dynamics can be unpredictable and I occasionally find myself in situations where I need to be flexible. This book is a treasure chest of ideas that can quickly and easily be turned into fun and practical lessons. But it's more than a quick fix. The games have been well thought out to provide tangible value to the students who participate in them. PLEASE tell me there is an ESL Games for the Classroom II in the works!

"ESL Games for the Classroom" has given me a useful tool to present lessons that engage my students. Lesson prep is easy, and the games are really fun.As with his other books, Michael DiGiacomo has proven again his ability to share his knowledge and love for teaching ESL.

This book gives you the foundation to make listening, speaking, reading, and writing activities. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to play lots of games in class.

Michael DiGiacomo doesn't leave any game/stone unturned. This book provides a great variety of fun and engaging games to do with your ESL students. They cover all modalities and Michael DiGiacomo even manages to make grammar fun! Keep it on your desk (or your iPad) because you'll use it a lot and frequently!

Review

'For anyone wishing to have the essence of Berlin's thinking, Liberty is the volume to have.' John Banville, Irish Times'Liberty not only offers a comprehensive overview of Isaiah Berlin's main topics and ideas, but also enables us to understand the development and relevance of those ideas in the context of his personality.' Steffen Gross, DialektikReviews of Four Essays of Liberty`Practically every paragraph introduces us to half a dozen new ideas and as many thinkers - the landscape flashes past, peopled with familiar and unfamiliar people, all arguing incessantly. It is all a very long way from the austere eloquence of Mill's marvellous essay On Liberty, with whichthis collection's title seems to challenge comparison; but it is a measure of the stature of these essays that they stand such a comparison.'Alan Ryan, New Society`These famous essays ... are informed by that radical humanism, in the truest sense of that impoverished word, which has attached Sir Isaiah so closely to such nineteenth century figures as Herzen and Mill ...'Philip Toynbee, Observer

If you are at all interested in the topic of personal liberty, you must read Isaiah Berlin. This book includes all of his important work on the topic.

It is like a textbook. Assign yourself a chapter and analyze before proceeding.

good book

This volume presents Berlin's main essays on Liberty, including the "Four Essays on Liberty", considered by himself as his most important book. They are preceded by a long "Introduction" which explains his thought and the profound debates to which it gave birth. "Political Ideas in the Twentieth Century" explains the historical-philosophical genesis of the great schools of thought that dominated the turbulent XX Century and which can basically - with an infinity of subtleties, minor coincidences, and internal contradictions - be synthesized in the division between those schools that tried to find totalizing - and frequently totalitarian - solutions for human problems, at least the ones pertaining to public affairs, and those other schools that tried to discover the basic rules of human interaction and respect, building upon which those individuals and the groups voluntarily formed by them may pursue their ends and ideas in an interference-free environment, even taking into account the inevitable confusions and chaos that may ensue. In the background, there is the old and never resolved tension between "security" and "freedom": between the sacrifice of doubt and dissent lest a pretended harmony and consensus on means and ends perils, on the one hand, and the uncomfortable acceptance of a certain degree of cacophony, ups and downs, and conflict, which nevertheless allows for a fecund interplay of the different individuals' freedoms and the fruits of imagination in action."The Historical Inevitability" portrays the anxiety, reinforced by the perceived accuracy of prediction of the sciences, to discover the "laws" of History, analogous to sciences' laws, which allow us to find causal and necessary explanations to the results of the human interaction of millions of individuals, which are thus reduced to mere instruments or puppets of huge, impersonal and irresistible forces. This anxiety's children, Relativism and Determinism, annihilate the person and have produced chaos, confusion and great violence."Two Concepts of Freedom", the most famous and controversial of his essays, analyzes the difference between negative freedom (freedom "from"), and positive freedom (freedom "to"). Negative freedom rests at the base of individual dignity, and of course it's not absolute. Building from a basic consensus (John Rawls's "overlapping consensus"?) about absolutely unacceptable behaviors in a society (at the same time limits and guarantees of one's own freedom), the individual must be free to do as he pleases, given that he assumes responsibility for the consequences of his actions. Positive freedom is a paradox, since it can be either a complement or a negation of the negative type. It is the freedom to intervene in other people's affairs. In its "benign" version (although Berlin never makes this division explicit), positive freedom can be used to gather wills in favor of the common good. But in its "pernicious" version, this freedom can be used to impose on others behaviors unwanted by them, that is, to impose unacceptable limits to their negative freedom. Which is where it always, almost inevitably, tends to go. Therefore, the fundamental political struggle must be the permanent defense of the negative freedoms. It's difficult to find a more lucid and clear presentation of liberty's dilemmas, as well as of a definition of personal dignity."John Stuart Mill and the Ends of Life" presents MIll's thought, and above all the central epiphany that, very early on, defined his life: the discovery of emotions, that happiness can not be imposed and not even determined a priori; but that it is an uncertain and difficult task that, if ever, can only be reached, lost, and reappraised by each individual through his free and deliberate action, necessarily confusing, and only limited by other people's freedom. It is, thus, a passionate defense of diversity and the infinite possibilities of human life."Free of All Hope and Fear", examines the paradoxical (although not necessarily incompatible) relationship between knowledge and freedom. Am I freer every time I learn something new? Is more education conducive to more freedom? It's hard to affirm or deny it outright. That both knowledge and freedom are good, it seems certain. That all "good" things are always compatible, is not so clear."The Birth of Greek Individualism" is, particularly, an iconoclast and provoking essay. It refutes the ingrained idea that, after the battle of Cheronea, in 338 BC, and the dissolution of Athenian splendor, a moral and intellectual decadence prevailed. Maybe not. Maybe that disruption of the "organic community" was not a disaster, but a liberation. For several centuries, knowledge remained free from politics and pursued more fruitful paths, free from the burden of public affairs. The divorce between morals and politics; interior life as the authentic life; morals and happiness as attributes of the individual's, and not of the whole polis; gave way perhaps to a great breathing room, to peace and intellectual progress. The volume closes with a "Final Retrospective" and three autobiographical texts which round up a magnificent edition of one of the richest, most original, freshest, and most provoking philosophical oeuvres of all time. A work that is more alive than ever, more needed, more authentic and contrary to the inanities of politicians, prophets, ideologues, and other sunder current and permanent charlatans. The product of a truly free mind, at the same time profound and swift, it is certainly one of the best products of philosophy of our time.

The Late Isaiah Berlin was authority on philosophy and a historian of ideas. Born in Latvia, he moved to Russia with his parents when he was six. As an eight year-old he witnessed the May Revolution and the October Bolshevik Revolution that installed Lennin and instituted the Soviet reign of terror. He escaped to England with his family in 1921 where he was educated at St. Paul's School and Oxford, University. His early experience with totalitarianism colored his life's work in the world of ideas and throughout his career he was an articulate and sometimes lonely voice for liberty and the liberal, pluralistic society. This book "Liberty" is a newly edited and expanded edition of Berlin's most famous work "Four Essays in Liberty." Since his death, his editor Henry Hardy had drawn together his books and essays and they have been assembled in new editions. In "Liberty" he sets out to follow the concept of Liberty. In one of the most illuminating essays he sets out to answer the question: "What is Political Liberty" which then segues into the "The Birth of Greek Individualism." In "Two Concepts of Liberty" he takes western intellectuals to task for the results of the dangerous ideas that they heralded. He cites Henrich Heine who warned us that "philosophical concepts in the stillness of a professor's study could destroy a civilization." In his essay "Historical Inevitably" he attacks the Marxist notion that there are inevitable stages of history, that one stage follows another as winter follows fall and he traces the path of thought in the past terrible epoch in "Political Ideas in the 20th Century." Each of the essays are thoughtful, trenchant and well argued. In a time when far too many intellectuals still adhere to ideas that were the foundation of terror, Isaiah Berlin's advocacy and exploration of human freedom should find a wide audience.

Most of the book is devoted to thermodynamics and it doesn't introduce statistical mechanics until the final chapters. As an undergraduate text it provides all you'll need for a solid foundation in thermal physics and it's a bit more rigorous than Schroeder. The problems at the end of the chapters are not as good as the ones you'll find in Schroder or other standard texts, and are often ambiguously worded. Answers to problems are in the back of the book which lets you check your work (there isn't a solutions manual). It's a book that will get you by the thermal physics portion of the GRE, but I find my knowledge in statistical mechanics to be lacking after a semester with this book. Overall, I think this textbook is better for classical thermodynamics and the Schroeder book is better for statistical mechanics.

This book is ancient. It was my required textbook for Thermal Physics. It can be somewhat hard to read, almost rambley at times, but once you get the hang of it it’s fine. It’s very wordy. The price is nice though.

Book cover was separated from the pages, aside from this, pages are almost like new! Great book!

Good summary of thermodynamics.

Overcomplicated. The entire book. I'm not just talking rigorous... A good example is the two page proof that the number of microstates in n particles, if each can range from 0 to q, whereas the sum of all must add up to q, is n + q - 1 CHOOSE q. This can be proved (just as formally) in about 3 lines, while being much more intuitive!

"Thermodynamics, Kinetic Theory, and Statistical Thermodynamics (3rd Edition)" is an excellent text to learn the fundamentals. This text should be the text any Physics Professor uses. Do not be fooled by other texts. This one is the best. My professor now is trying to create his own text for Thermo, and it is horrible. Publishers need to be more honest to their clients!

Not very useful. That was my first impression of this book. Suppose I had left my review to the three words above. You would have been left with an empty feeling with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if there was more to it than just those words. You'd probably say my review wasn't very helpful.Well, that about sums up my feelings for this text. Every time I open it for reference, I read a few pages, looking for something that just doesn't seem to be there. I am left with expectations unfulfilled, wondering if I was missing something. I usually put it back on the shelf and move to the next book, thinking "Hmm. That wasn't very helpful."This book sits in my library next to the Callen text on thermo and stat mech. I also have a copy of Reichl's stat mech text. Between Salinger, Callen, and Reichl, one might begin to get a handle on the subject, but not one of these books is the *definitive* text on the subject. I haven't found that one yet. I would suggest that if one is looking for yet another reference text, put this one in the number 2 or number 3 slot on your list.

#273,016 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If Venkatesh were a student at an Ivy League school instead of a professor, this book would probably have been handed back with extensive red markings and a note to see the professor. Or a better copy editor. Or a therapist. Written in the first person, the book follows his move to NYC, desperate search for research subjects, quest for tenure, attempt to define sociology and eventual break up with his wife. All the personal upheaval in his life leads to muddled prose. The book lacks the details and insights that would otherwise make the characters from NYC's underworld fully 3-dimensional.

I felt the writer was a bit self conscious. He admits that, but still, I admit it did bother me at times. In the world in which he chose to navigate and 'research' one never knows exactly how accurate an account of that he wishes to study, that he is actually obtaining. It seemed interesting, yet ambiguous, neither research nor novel, vignettes, almost a story, but not quite. There is so little to reference it in some ways. He doesn't explore the personalities and character of his subjects deeply. That is OK, but it lacks the intensity of a fiction where we become involved with the lives of those we are meeting in the pages. There is something impersonal about the people in the book and our author appears to try to keep it that way. Yet, I also had the feeling that he cared for several of them and those are the ones we got to know a bit more than some of the others. There is little discussion of social morality or what the effects of those social practices are upon their practitioners. Perhaps that is as it should have been for the purposes of the kind of book he wished to write. It did occur to me some days after finishing reading the book how much better off our world would be if drugs and prostitution were totally legal in every way and regulated as legitimate commerce. I didn't have any sense of how the author felt about that and perhaps its unimportant, but such a book does assist one in thinking of such things. I think that is good. I was disappointed in that the author himself remained such an enigma. After all, we spent all our time with him. I never felt as if I met him, this guy I spent a whole book with, reading his thoughts.

Author does research on the sex industry in NY and the interactions of the different people with each other. He becomes emotionally involved ( not sexually) with his subjects. Author links some of his feelings with his own failing marriage but that was a side issue. The book was drawn out for too many chapters and did not follow characters in depth as much as the reader would have liked. Most of what he writes about is illegal ,such as prostitution ,drug pushing and pimping so how he could write about it without police involvement made me wonder how much the police ignore and how much they are paid to ignore.Interesting book but not a compelling read.

I read Floating City today -- I had pre-ordered it to be downloaded to my ipad. The stories in the book about all the people in the 'underground' Venkatesh encountered are very well done and the fact that white elites were among them makes the book even more compelling to read. However, while Venkatesh frames New York City as one that floats; his continued somewhat unenthusiastic dialogue about the general field of Sociology as well as his Columbia colleagues becomes a broken record pretty early on in the book. This distracts from all the complex, sometimes dark, and interesting characters and social networks that unfold in the book. Shine tells Venkatesh near the end of the book that he and others know how to move on but he sees Venkatesh as standing still and doing nothing. Venkatesh did write this book and it does have a lot to offer, but the narrative feels somewhat forced specifically because of his fixation on how Sociology doesn't seem to take him that seriously. The result is that he often comes off as somewhat whiny. So let's look at the evidence: he is a tenured full professor with an endowed chair at one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country. His documentary film, Dislocation, which focuses on the forced relocation of public housing residents in Chicago, is used in urban sociology, geography, and urban policy classrooms all over the country -- as is his previous autobiographical book "Gang Leader". I'd say he is doing very well as a Sociologist. Implicit here is that Columbia University and his colleagues have supported his research both for academic and broader audiences.

Another work by the Columbia University sociologist Venkatesh, who illuminates the "darker" side of New York City dwellers. If you still believe that the poor don't try hard enough, read this book. It demonstrates how some poor people can't catch a break and how others resort to any means they can to survive.

I read this book after the interesting bit the author worked on Freakanomics. I was expecting something new and interesting about the new york underground economy....what I found was generalities you can catch on a tv show.

The underground economy in New York would have been a fascianting topic This book is at best a collection of anecdotes centering more on the author than the alleged topic and not presenting any non- obvious insights into the underground economy His discussions of events in his life and his reactions to people he meets are uninteresting whines of a privileged academic

I adore Sudhir Ventakesh's writing, reporting and storytelling. Unfortunately, he disappointed me this go around. It was self indulgent and subjective. Too self reflective and a conclusion that was thinly thread together.
