This book truly made a course that I dreaded taking enjoyable. I recommend this book whether you are taking a dance course or if you would just like to improve your knowledge of dance and its components in general. It is written in a way that is easily comprehensible to most readers. I give this book a four star rating because, while certain aspects of dance (such as its elements) are highlighted, this book does not go into strong detail when referring to various styles. As previously stated, however, this book is wonderful for a scholar or dance enthusiast to read in order to increase his/her general knowledge of the art of dance.

I have been a longtime fan of the late Carl Sagan but I had never read his final book before his death. I purchased this volume (Billions & Billions: Thoughts on life and earth at the brink of the millennium by Carl Sagan) for a bargain price on Amazon and found this volume to be an insightful and thoughtful text of essays.This wonderful book is organized into three parts. Part one (The power and beauty of quantifications) covers the following: Billions and billions, the Persian chessboard, Monday-night hunters, the gaze of God and the dripping faucet, four cosmic questions and so many suns, so many worlds. The second part (What are conservatives conserving?) deals with the world that came in the mail, the environment, Croesus and Cassandra, a piece of the sky is missing, ambush: the warming of the world, escape from ambush and religion and science: an alliance. The final part (Where hearts and minds collide) focuses on the common enemy, abortion: is it possible to be both “Pro-life” and “pro-choice”? The rules of the game, Gettysburg and now, the twentieth century and the valley of the shadow.Even though I do not agree with everything Carl Sagan writes about in this book; nevertheless, the vast majority of material is timely and thought provoking. His thoughts on his life and realizing his health was failing makes this a must book to read for fans of Carl Sagan.In one respect, Carl Sagan will live on through his many classic books.Rating: 5 Stars. Carl Sagan's last book inspires, provokes, entertains and informs. Although much of the material is dated, each article has a theme that is much more important than the information it contains, and not at all dated. How should we approach the questions of abortion, climate change, military spending, the threat of nuclear war, faith, reason, education, equality, politics, love, life and death? Carl has been my inspiration since 1980. I can't see a day when his musings won't inspire me. While Carl is my hero, I don't accept all of his assertions and conclusions, and Carl would approve. Republicans as a party are anti-science, but I would not put that label on someone for being conservative as he does. Shouldn't military spending be viewed as a percentage of a country's GDP rather than just dollars? Isn't the presence of brain activity just as arbitrary as any measurable property of a fetus in considering the ethics of abortion? While I don't always agree with him, I do appreciate him tackling the hardest of questions. That he does so respectfully and compassionately is inspiring. I miss him every day.

If you've read any other books by Carl Sagan, you'll recognize a lot of what's in here. This book is a compendium of all the things he believed needed to be dealt with by the human species. For some issues, he brings up old ideas in new ways. For others, he repeats what he's already said before. That being said.... I still immensely enjoyed the book.

Dr. Sagan does it again in his last book. This one, a bit more user friendly and science light, is a wonderful read. I couldn't put it down and was borderline in tears towards the end (coming from someone rife with defense mechanisms). We really need the revival of compassionate skepticism that Dr. Sagan's prose is the master of.Pros: for the layman, wonderfully informative, reads easy, so much wisdom and compassion.Cons: if you've read all his others there will be overlap, but that never hurts. It's kind of emotionally heavy, which again, isn't necessarily bad.

I'm a big fan of the late Carl Sagan and have read many of his books. Most 5 stars. See my reviews.This was the last book he wrote as he was dieing with a rare form of blood cancer. His wife Ann Druyan has 2 chapters she co wrote in the book as well as the Epilogue as Carl was dieing with pneumonia caused by his weakened immune system from chemotherapy against his blood cancer. She had to write the acknowledgements as Carl had passed away.In Billions and Billions we see a picture of both the late Johnnie Carson( a serious amateur astronomer) and Carl laughing on the Tonight Show. Carl says he never used the term Billions and Billions but that it became linked to him as a possible description of all the stars in the galaxies.Carl did it all. Co founder and past president of the Planetary society I belong to. He had over 20 honorary degrees from various colleges and universities bestowed on him. He was a fantastic author of many books and scientific articles including the highly successful Cosmos TV series, the book Contact and more. He had the uncanny ability to write difficult scientific ideas in ways for the average layman to understand in an enjoyable reading session. He also helped in the NASA Viking Mars robot landing mission, the gold plated disc that is supposed to last a billion years sent out into deep space with Voyager having mankind's descriptions, music and more, as well as helping to understand the Venus Greenhouse effect that has Venus at almost 900F is hot enough to melt lead and tin with an atmosphere 90 times as dense as Earth's.He was much more optimistic than me on the possibility of many different kinds of life in the universe in some very harsh environments. Carl tried not to put down others scientific theories and ideas but wanted data in the open for all to test. Not closed data and wishful thinking.In Billions and Billions again we see his ease of handling huge numbers by scientific notation. There was a very interesting chapter on the destruction of the Ozone layer and the steps we have taken to repair it before its too late and what more needs done. Then there is a chapter on Global warming and a warning that he hopes it not too late and more must be done to get off fossil fuels as soon as possible before we have a runaway greenhouse effect like planet Venus. His biggest fears is the 70,000 plus hydrogen bombs/weapons stockpiled by the US and ex Soviet Union. Carl explains there are so many nuclear weapons that could cause a mankind extinction level event. He says the risk is too great and all countries must disarm now. He even gave a speech to both the US government and Soviet leaders about the need to trust one another to disarm before its too late.Carl writes about having to go to the head cancer center in Seattle 4 times to battle his reoccurring blood cancer and his repeated bone marrow transplants from his younger sister Cari. His battle for me was heartbreaking and I had much empathy for him. I shed a few tears reading the later part of the book. He tells his kids including Sasha and youngest 5 year old Sam he loves them all. Anne Druyan's closing remark on the back cover made me shed a tear too. It was emotional to me and I got choked up.Carl's wonderful family and wife Annie was there for him in the end at his bed side.Dr. Carl Sagan a great scientist/astronomer who helped so many to partially understand the wonders of the universe and fought long and hard against nuclear weapons, global warming and the Ozone layer depletion. A wonderful father and husband. Again as a 40 plus year amateur astronomer I miss him and even though he never knew of me, I'm glad to call him my friend. 5 stars a great book.

I'm surprised at how many reviews from the last few years are giving this book 4 and 5 stars. If you are really planning to work with animals professionally or with your own dogs you should read this book in context. It was written 18 years ago! Current best practices around aversion and punishment are very different. Indeed of the dozen or so books I've read by Sophia Yin, Patricia McConnell and training I've received from canine massage therapists and humane society staff, the message is unanimous- only positive reinforcement training develops healthy, balanced dogs. Aversion and positive punishment create the potential for future problem behavior. Read this if you want to understand how training theory has developed in 20 years but for guidance on how to work with dogs, look to newer texts informed by more recent research.

I am currently studying to become a professional dog trainer and working under a mentor trainer. This book was required reading for me as the concepts covered are a major part of our curriculum.I enjoyed the scientific approach taken in this book. As well as the references to particular studies that support the information provided.

Loved this book. Any excellent presentation on operant conditioning for the lay person interested in dog training. The examples presented were clear and represented every day situations that we see with our own dogs. The hard science is there but it is presented in such a fashion that you don't have to be a psychologist to understand it. It also presented a nice historical summary of dog training and how it developed over time.

The book was recommended to me by a renowned dog trainer because I had all kinds of questions about what's really going on when I train my dog. The book really goes into the underlying science of behavior (both human and canine) and modification thereof.While the science is there, and some may think it a bit dry, it is vital to truly understanding how to breach any canine/human barriers present in the training environment. While there is scientific detail, the book us replete with real life examples (both human & canine) of behavior issues and the remedies applied. I know I'll be referring back to this book repeatedly from now on.

I anticipated an instructional book on how to benefit from understanding the way Dogs learn, but this is a dry, boring, complicated, scientific book that focuses on case studies that are not helpful.

This book reads a bit more like a science paper than your average dog book, but it was a refreshing change. I actually feel like I learned something from this book. It doesn't give many specific examples of how to train, but it does help the reader be aware of what messages you are sending your dog (possibly without knowing it). If you really want to get into dog training I can't think of a better book to really immerse yourself in for dog training "lingo" and very detailed descriptions of different methodologies. This book picks apart many different training methods and shows what really works, what doesn't, and why. It advocates a more positive approach to training.

Lots of detailed information on behavioral characteristics of dogs. Written like a textbook so it might have too much psychological discourse for some readers.

This book is for seasoned or veteran dog trainers. Very effective if applied by somebody knows what he/she is doing. I would highly recommend this book.

If I did not have this book, I would not be able to make a living as a copywriter. I never leave home without it. It flies with me on trips, it goes to every copy shop with me. It is my reference guide, my idea sparker, and my mindmap helper. Other books are more helpful to learn copywriting (this does not teach writing), but nothing is more helpful in sparking ideas than this one.

This book is definitely NOT for someone that wants fresh, new ways to write ads and copy for marketing for today's day and age. You'll find a lot of tired and used-to-the bone phrases in this book. A lot of phrases you'll find here are found in cheesy infomercials like, "Act now!" and "What have you got to lose?!" Do you think Apple uses CTA's like this or any other brands that are supreme at marketing? I don't think so. Use an online thesaurus and save yourself some money. I do believe this could be useful for someone that is just beginning and not sure where to start though.

This is an indispensable reference book for the small business owner. Words are grouped by situation, description, etc so you can quickly find just the right word or phrase to accurately describe your service or product.For example, say you need to eliminate customer balking and justify a high price. There happens to be a category for "Justifying A High Price," how about that? This book was recommended to me by one of the women in an online handmade seller group that I belong to. Online sellers constently struggle with writing powerful, catchy product descriptions and headlines and this book gives you tons of ideas to work with. I'm slowly working through my listings and updating them which will hopefully increase my sales.Highly recommend.

This is a great source for words to use in product descriptions and writing advertisements.BUT it repeats a lot of words and phrases throughout the book - hence the 3 stars.

I get stuck a lot using the same words over and over again in my writing. This book has been great for helping me break that habit. Tons of neatly organized suggestions for a variety of common situations I run into on a regular basis while writing product descriptions.

some of the words/phrases recommended are unbelievably mundane, that it's surprising they made it onto a book that sells for money. does contain occasional gems but nothing that savvy marketers havent seen before. if used as a "thesaurus for marketers", then it gets incredibly tedious to go through whole list of obvious fillers just to find one phrase or word that works.
