Amazon.com Review

Lyle the crocodile lives in a house on East 88th Street in New York City. He likes it there, and his hosts, the Primms, like having him around--he helps young Joshua with his homework, jumps-rope with the neighborhood kids, and browses through antique shops with Mrs. Primm. Much to the affable reptile's dismay, however, he makes his neighbor's cat Loretta crazy, which in turn makes Mr. Grumps, Loretta's owner, even crazier. One day, Mrs. Primm and Lyle are shopping, when Lyle--through no real fault of his own--ends up infuriating department-store bigwig Mr. Grumps who turns red and blue and purple with rage. This unfortunate eruption lands the rollicking reptile in the Central Park zoo where Lyle fights back his crocodile tears. In an elaborate sequence of events, Lyle finds himself back with the Primms on East 88th Street, a neighborhood hero, and, startlingly, even a friend of the mistrustful cat Loretta. Bernard Waber--creator of The House on East 88th Street--charms young readers again with this endearing, whimsical 1965 classic, perfectly complemented by his simple, sketchy, comical illustrations. (Ages 4 to 8)

This book seems to ramble on and on and not in an engaging way. There is a lot of repetition and the parts of the story aren't engaging. Also since this a 'classic' - portrayal of characters encourages old stereotypical mindset even though the message of the story is that looks can be deceptive and to be inclusive. So message is great but not a good execution unfortunately.

Bought this for a one year old's birthday party gift because I remembered the Lyle stories growing up in the 80's. This book is very cute, and I would give it again for a child's gift. Great for a kid who loves dogs, and it is a good counting book too.

Our 4 yr old daughter loves to read. Bought it for Christmas and will look into buying the other "Lyle Crocodile" books. This book is a classic, in my opinion. Lyle lives with his human family in NYC and not everyone appreciates him at first. Love the hardback edition.

I noticed that among the few readers that disliked the Lyle books I have reviewed read them to children that were too young. I think a child should be at least 5 to thoroughly enjoy & understand them. My 6 year old grandson loved this one & any time he was cranky I would just tell him that he wa acting like Mr. Grumps (which he would promptly deny) but his behavior automatically improved.

Another classic. Buy this along with the one that comes before it, The House on East 88th Street". My 3 & 5 year old grandsons love Lyle!

This is one of the greatest books ever.

Christmas gift for granddaughter she loves books.

Cute read
