There is a school of legal scholarship that blends some of the most radical theories extant in legal circles today, christened "radical multiculturalism" by Daniel A. Farber and Suzanna Sherry, law professors at the University of Minnesota; in their book, Beyond All Reason, they give us plenty of reasons to worry about it. According to Farber and Sherry, both long-standing liberals, radical multiculturalism gives liberalism a bad name. It is a system of thought that admits no objective reality, no truth, no hope of a just or equal society. Its proponents--everyone from critical race theorist Richard Delgado to feminist Catharine MacKinnon--posit that such values are merely tools of the dominant society (white males) used to keep everyone else subservient. In such a world, then, it doesn't matter whether or not O.J. Simpson killed his ex-wife; the objective truth in that case is less important than the fact that a black man was put on trial in a white-dominated society, making him at least as much a victim as Nicole Simpson. Farber and Sherry write with restraint and patience, but there's no doubt that they're seriously alarmed by what they see as the disproportionate power that radical multiculturalists wield in the legal world. Though their numbers are small, proponents of this kind of legal thinking are vocal and aggressive; their influence is being reflected more and more by the choices of law school professors and deans, the slant of curriculums, and eventually in the thinking of the students they teach. To Farber and Sherry, such a turn of events is cause for deep concern, for what hope can there be for real justice--real peace--in a legal system that rejects the existence of truth--or worse, denies that it matters.

I like the last two sentences of the authors' Conclusion on pg.143: "In short, we must always be open to dialogue. But even pragmatists . . . must sometimes stand on principle." This seems fair to me.Too many I fear, believe that negotiation means to meet somewhere in the middle. I don't. However I believe that my side can listen to and consider the other side's arguments to see if anything has changed before saying No.According to radical multiculturists stand fact and reason on their heads in their efforts to remake the world into their version of a better place. They put idealism foreward and then insist that anything that does not accomplish it in society must be overturned no matter that such bending goes against truth and reason. Example: It doesn't matter that Twana Brawley (sp?) was proven to have cooked up her claim of maltreatment by whites. I suppose that her defenders would say that her claimed injustices COULD HAVE happened and therefore she should not be punished for her devious conduct of lying. Instead people should consider her claims to have merit.I find nothing to yield to when confronting radical multiculturism as set out in this book. I know that my fellow octogenarians usually resist change. I believe this resistance is because we usually find no good reason for it. But in the case of American law taking notice of faddish, modern concepts that go against nature as does most or all of radical multiculturism, all reasonable adults should heed and benefit from the wisdom of experienced old persons who are not in our dotage.Some say that it is unfair to exclude or downgrade certain favored concepts advanced by minorities (into which I place women for purposes of this opinion). To this claim of unfairness I ask: Is it unfair to hold out against religions that practice dark age barbarism, misogyny, and adherence to the demand that all independence of individuals be surrendered to the demands of some dark age prophet? Must society consent to the feminization of our armed forces even though women lack the physical strength of men? IQ is the measure of one's capacity to deal with complexity; and degree of "success" in life is usually proportional to IQ score. It has been shown that some races possess higher mean, bell-curve IQs than others. Jews and East Asians tend to score above Hispanics and Blacks. For example It has become obvious that Jews and East Asians qualify in much higher numbers for entry into intellectually demanding American universities than do Blacks and Hispanics. Therefore why shouldn't high intellectual merit be placed in positions of responsibility, over applicants who have less?Over the centuries our U.S. society has prospered remarkably by encouraging merit by rewarding it. Additionally, until recently we have been unencumbered by restrictions on what we as individual can say. Such has begun to be undone especially on university campuses.Our society has made it anathema to speak of or otherwise recognize racial differences of most types, except in the game of basketball. I submit that society deserves being faulted for not recognizing AND ACTING ON racial differences. I also submit that Western Civilization is superior and must be protected.The book pertains to American Law. All that I have stated above fits into that category.

With a clarity and unpretentious use of language, with thoughtful supply of definitions, and the presentation of a methodical and structured argument Farber and Sherry take on the obscurantism and pretentious polemics of post-modern "scholarship". While their arguments and marshalling of facts are impressive, their style and form is also exemplary of the best in Western enlightened tradition. Very strongly recommended.

This book, while well written and easy to follow, only rings true if the reader has an incomplete understanding of Critical Race Theorists (those who the authors deem "Radical Multiculturalists").Their explanation of Critical Race Theory is only half-finished at best, and at worst it's downright misleading. The book is filled with conclusions that Farber and Sherry argue are the only logical answers to "Radical Multiculturalist" claims. In reality these Critical Race Theory claims should lead to very different conclusions that have been more fully explained elsewhere, but are blatantly ignored here.It would be easy for many with life experience typical for academics/legal students to take the conclusions drawn in this book as reasonable and look no further. But if we are ever to strive for real objectivity in the law (what Farber and Sherry claim to be defending), we must acknowledge that the "Reasonable Man" of the Enlightenment needs to be seriously reexamined as a perspective that is inadequate for serving everyone in our diverse country.Please look into Critical Race Theory scholarship and take part in both sides of this debate. I think you will find that the critique of the other side is not the "Radical Assault on Truth" that Farber and Sherry think it is, but rather a valid, scholarly, critical take on how our legal system ACTUALLY functions (which is not currently in a state of objectivity).

I very much enjoyed this book and looked forward to reading it every day. I read the first in the series, Pillars of the Earth, many years ago and hoped this would be as good. I was not disappointed! It was a well written saga about the people of Kingsbridge and it was a compelling read, seeing their lives progress over the years. The author's knowledge of the period was superb and he managed to work in many relevant historical facts throughout the story. I think my only critique of this lengthy, entertaining novel is that the dialogue and relationships of the characters seemed at times more suited to a modern day story than one of medieval times. That did not detract tremendously from the story, but did make me feel that the story was, at times, unrealistic and did not ring true.

I don't mind a bit of sex in a novel, but this reads like cheesy soft core porn. What's really confounding is that Follett has some brilliant, independent women...and others who are just rape bait. Worse, one of the protagonists seems to enjoy the second time she is raped. This could have been a serious, well researched, historical novel, instead it's full of puns about 'moist clefts'. (ostensibly about masonry). And many anachronisms: I sort of doubt that even the most forward 14 century women felt 'sexy'. Some of the other plots and characters are quite interesting, but I just gave up

"Pillars of the Earth has been one of my favorite books of all time since it was published long, long ago. I don't know why I waited to read it's sequel until book 3 was published, but I did. I love Follett's astonishing attention to detail, his characters from all classes and walks of life, and how each character is so realistic and three-dimensional. 200 years may have passed between the settings of books 1 and 2 and yet there is enough background given that someone could start here should they desire (but I would please with them to read in order for full detail). We are now a different society than when Pillars was published, and Follett brings more juicy detail to scenes of both desire and battle. I am on to book 3: "A Column of Fire.". If you are not daunted by 91 chapters and more than 1000 pages, I invite you to drive right in. "World without End" will not disappoint.

This is the second in a series, and like The Pillars of the Earth, it is well written. However, it falls short of the first, and I found myself simply slogging through it just waiting for the bad guys to receive their just desserts, because, as in the first, the bad guys really deserved it!The main problem with this story is that there was no true hero. When you describe evil in the graphic way Follett does, you must have a hero or heroine to counterbalance it. In the first book, the author brilliantly sketched such a man: Prior Phillip. In this story, the "good guys" are more or less out for their own "dreams," not the defense of Good. The main heroine does have some idea of doing good to her neighbor, and dedicates herself to it, but she has no overarching convictions behind it: no God-consciousness, no theological convictions (save for a vague idea of helping others), and I found myself even wondering if she was truly representative of the time period. She seemed more like a 60s flower child than a medieval woman.So in the end, I just waited around for the bad guys to die. There were no memorable moments, such as Prior Phillip leading the procession of mourners after the murder of Thomas a Becket. Lots of bad stuff--murder and rape--and the Plague. Not for kids!

"World Without End" is full of personal intrigue, sex, violence, and other colorful bits that have made medieval history so interesting to the contemporary reader. I definitely recommend reading this book before reading "A Column of Fire," which is the third novel in this series. It's a gargantuan tome, and at times I've skipped ahead to the meatier parts, but if you're interested in details about life in medieval England, then this is the book for you.

This is the second book in the Kingsbridge series. Although it follows "Pillars of the Earth" it really is not a sequel at all and can be read by itself.While science fiction is my main genre I occasionally read other stuff. Follett's historical fiction is one of those that I read from time to time. Overall this was a great book and easy to read. It follows the patterns that seem to exist in his other books in that it follows a couple of groups of related or loosely related people as they face one challenge at the other. Sometimes it is predictable but even then it is always enjoyable. The setting and culture that the stories take place are well researched and I always feel a better appreciation for those times and places after reading one of his books. Of course Kingsbridge is a made up town it is easy to realize it could be any town in England at that time. There is now a third book in this series out. I plan on reading it at some point in the future to be sure.

Heads up that the general plot of this book mirrors the first one in a way that is very ho-hum at times. Both World Without End and Pillars of the Earth feature: 1. star crossed lovers 2. male protags obsessed with building 3. strong female leads who push their lower-status lovers away 4. a series of back and forth one-upmanships that drives the plot and 5. the male leaving England to build his dream structure on the Continent. This time the antagonist is the churchman, a 180 from PotE.That's not to say it's a bad book. It's a nice read, but yes the rehashing of a previous plot does get very boring at times. The romance is less than in PotE and the novel focuses on a greater range of people, from nuns to merchants to serfs to lords and even touches on the king himself. The addition of probably the most devastating plague of all time certainly adds a dramatic element. Follett just released a third Kingsbridge novel. Let's hope the plot isn't as predictable.

I appreciated both the support and criticism given to various components of the Common Core. The authors seem to move around and through the modern political fashion just fine as they present concrete examples of the functional teaching of reading. The folksy style makes the book accessible, and many see it as a strength. I prefer just a bit more formality. Some of the "research" used to support the techniques refers to educator blog posts, but much of it does appear to be authentic educational research of varying quality. The techniques do have strong anecdotal support. In a sentence: The two authors do appear to know their business, and communicate it succinctly and accessibly.

This book is an absolute must read for any non-English teacher in high school- although it would serve as a good reminder to ela teachers as well. I could absolutely see this book being approached as a PLC book study for groups trying to close the achievement gap in the area of secondary literacy- so many explicit strategies that could help a school building or department get traction towards reaching their goals.

This book is pretty simple. I am not sure why so many people love it.

For a textbook this is very practical and easy to read. Lots of examples and ideas to use in the classroom.

Had to use this for school!

Andrew Tobias' and 'Adam Smith's' tails of speculation in the '60s/70s saved me from the internet bubble, and for that reason, it's important to have a copy of this book and read it. Because, have no doubt, we will go through this whole thing again. In your lifetime, probably sooner than later.Genius does fail, pretty regularly, especially in the investment arena. Index funds still out-perform most of the managed funds. And yet this week the managed funds were once again reporting net inflows. I see and hear lots of praise for Black-Scholes. Surf the web and you'll find it loaded with training courses on how to use it. Never do they come with any examination of it's potential problems.Our Caveat Emptor society comes with an obligation to be educated on this stuff. Read Genius Failed, read Random Walk, read Popular Delusions, read Liar's Poker, read The Money Game, read, read, read. Otherwise, well, Wall Street's an expensive place to get an education, and with the coming problems in Medicare, and Social Security, we're all going to be faced with managing our retirements. The uneducated will be as lambs led to slaughter.January 2008 update - Do you suppose Lowenstein is already at work on one on the mortgage bond mess. I did read a funny quote from the CEO of Wells Fargo to the effect that he saw no reason for the creation of new ways of destroying investment value when the old ones were already working so well. For example:• Hubris v humility;• Arrogance v meekness• Over confidence v modesty;• Pride v humility;• Condescension v respect;• Disdain v respect;• Contempt v admirationand so it goes on.A reader is somewhat reminded by the verse “as you shall sow, then so shall you reap”. Such an apt phrase seemingly applies throughout the book, but the one stand out is when management decides to fully redeem the capital of the outside investors, with a view to increasing management’s share of the pie, only to find that the geniuses at Long-Term Capital Management had failed to realise that by shafting these investors, they had (in the end) shafted themselves.

The real genius of the book was that Lowenstein nailed WHY genius failed. The same lessons the professors and traders at Long Term Capital failed to learn are the ones that all traders need to know. Trading in the financial markets is art as well as science. Knowing what quantitative models can and cannot do, and knowing when a model’s underlying assumptions are violated are key to successful trading. And finally, having the humility to accept that no matter how smart you are (or think you are) the financial markets can and will periodically make you look like an idiot.

Mike's book was a wake up call, I had been coasting! My numbers were okay but I knew I could deliver more. I read Sales Management Simplified and it was the kick up the backside I needed. I had got sloppy with regular 1:1's, was going through the motions with my team meetings. Not any more.I read Mr Weinberg's book every month, I even have it on Audible, his words inspired me to re-evaluate the way I was operating as a Sales Manager. No more coasting.Now our 1:1s happen every week, with talking points submitted by the sales person a few days before. Same with team meetings, they are interactive, fun and we learn together. I am in the field more and our 'ride-alongs' are much more structured and have become real occasions for development and learning.I manage remote sales teams so I need to be on the top of my sales game if I expect my team to deliver. I need to work smarter to inspire my sales force as they all sell from home offices and not on a bustling sales floor.I have no connection with Mike so believe me when I say that his book has helped me a) exceed tough team targets, b) develop my sales people c) given me fire in my belly and be proud to be a Sales Manager again.Let's be honest being a sales manager can be a lonely job, managing sales people and our superiors can be a tough job. Do yourself a favor, buy this book, read it, re-read it and act on it. Having Mike Weinberg in your corner will seriously improve your team results and get you passionate about the craft of sales management.
