Songs from the Alley explores homelessness in 1980s Boston, when the city boasted the most enlightened and aggressive homeless policy in the United States, thanks to its mayor, Raymond Flynn, the chairman of the U.S. Conference of Mayors' Task Force on Homelessness and Hunger. Hirsch creates an indelible portrait of homelessness, focusing on two women in their 30s: Wendy, an African American woman who suffers from alcoholism, and Amanda, a white woman who struggles to keep her small apartment and thrift shop job (and to refurbish a plywood dollhouse she finds at Goodwill). Through these two women, and the people Hirsch meets at the Pine Street Inn homeless shelter, she begins to understand the difference between those who seek help from the shelters and soup kitchens and those who won't. She also learns how and why homelessness has grown to the extent that it has and discovers the shortcomings of subsidized housing and job training programs, as she watches Amanda lose her job, fading in and out of functional life. This is quite an eye-opening book. I agree with one reviewer in that one thinks: that could happen to me. This is always a useful realization. The stories of the two ladies---the main characters, I guess, are interesting. But to me, the most interesting parts are the segments about how helping the homeless (and I suspect others) was a local undertaking. People in communities got involved, and the results were much better. Also, the story of the man who took over the XXXXXX house, who was himself homeless at one point, was interesting. He believed in charging people for a night's room (a very minimal amount) so that the person did not feel like they were on welfare (the book states it more eloquently than me). He also believed that these houses (night houses) should be non-judgmental. Just provide the room and be supportive; do not criticize or condescend. There were other really interesting parts about the history of homelessness and what people have tried to help these folks; e.g., how the New Deal actually *hurt* these shelters' ability to help the homeless. There were a lot of interesting parts, but I finished it a month ago and cannot recall the details. I do recall, however, that I frequently said to myself "wow," or "isn't that interesting" while reading the book. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the book rambles back and forth between the lives of the two ladies (another others), and the sociological history of the homeless, and I felt this disjointedness made the book more difficult to process than it should have been. However, that may well be too picky.Another interesting aspect to this work is that the Atlantic--great magazine--had a story on the homeless, and mentioned some recent books. Also, very interesting. But what I found most interesting is that some of the most important insights from the article and the newer books that it was reviewing, were already in this this book. But Hirsch's book was not mentioned. Thus, even though it is older (1980s?????), it is obviously still relevent.
I was left with one thought after reading this book: when has society done enough? What is the social obligation to a young woman who willingly leaves her home to live in the streets because she isn't happy living with her family? I felt little sympathy for Amanda, the first of two homeless Boston women who were profiled in the book.Wendy, the second woman profiled in the book, ended up living on the streets through a far more complicated set of circumstances, and reading her story was a far more profound experience. Getting her off the streets and keeping her in sheltered care would be a difficult and perhaps impossible goal to achieve. A person must be amenable to change if they are going to succeed in long-term shelter care or assisted living, and someone with a bad drug habit and mental health issues may not be willing or able to succeed even in the most structured living environment.I'm disappointed to note that this book has gone out of print.
We hear the phrase "it could happen to any of us" so often but most of us don't believe it. This book will tell you how easily it can happen. The stories of these women are heartwrenching, but yet, very educational. I could not put this book down and since reading it, I have been looking for similar books to purchase. We all need to educate ourselves more about people on the street. We should be outraged that this can happen in a rich country as ours. Next time you see a homeless person, don't look at that person in disgust and be jugdemental. Instead, think of ways you may be able to help.
