About the Author
Mary Austin (1868-1934) was born in Illinois. She later moved to California, where she gathered much of the background for her writings. Naturalist, essayist, feminist, and devoted opponent of commercial development, Austin wrote thirty-two books and more than two hundred essays in her lifetime, including Isidro (1905) and The Ford (1917). In 1925 she moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she lived in an adobe home until her death.Walter Feller is a California based nature and wildlife photographer. Since 1996, Feller’s work has focused on documenting the natural history of the Mojave Desert.

The text of the book was first published in 1903. Mary Hunter Austin was a highly regarded female writer in her day. One can glean a sense of what the Mojave desert area was like in the early nineteen hundreds. She was highly interested in the Shoshone and Paiute Indians as well as the Pocket Hunters in the Death Valley region. The photographs by Walter Feller, a modern day photographer, enhance the text greatly.

Walter Feller is my older brother. He has always displayed a fantastic artistic talent. I am amazed by his photography in this book. It brings together God's beauty and man's ability to honor his works.
Spellbinding for a nature lover or armchair traveler. A great companion book. I read it several times and will again, especially when there's a bitter wind and a heavy snowfall and I can't get out and enjoy being in nature. Her style is intimate and generous if you crave detail and want to feel as though you are with her in her travels. Unforgettable and a cherished favorite of mine.
Austins' text is, as history has proven, excellent. My problem with this version are the pictures. By themselves they are quite good. But the original text being from 1903 the addition of color photos clashes terribly...it simply does not work. Had they been in Black and White I believe it would have been a very nice work. Buy the original book by Austin, and give this one a pass.
